First, to be clear, there are three TS-950 rigs: - TS-950S - TS-950SD - TS-950SDX The TS-950S and TS-950SD are really identical, except for the following things: - TS-950SD comes from the factory with YK-88C-1, YG-455C-1, YG-455CN-1 and YG-455S-1 crystal filters pre-installed - TS-950SD comes with t...

- The TS-850 uses an LCD display while the TS-950SDX uses a florescent tube display. The latter has the advantage that it's visible at all angles, but the display on the TS-850 is sharper, which I prefer. Sorry for intervention, I'm a proud owner of the Kenwood TS850s AT and I know quite well this ...

A lucky find

This past weekend, a friend convinced me to drag my butt out of bed early on Saturday morning to visit the DeAnza College swap meet here in northern California. While wandering around, I happened to look down and saw not one, but two of these just sitting there on one vendor's table: http://people.f...

Well, since you asked, here's another recording made in SSB mode. This was recorded using the monitor on the TS-950SDX, in LSB mode, with the power control turned all the way down. http://people.freebsd.org/~wpaul/station/ssb3mics.mp3 There are 5 samples: - Kenwood MC-43S hand mic through the front ...

WANTED - Replacement TS-950SDX power button

This may be a bit of a long shot, but I may as well try: the previous owner of my TS-950SDX apparently got a lot of use out of it, so much so that he wore the silver finish off the main power button. The power control works fine, but I'd kind of like to find a replacement button with the finish stil...

Well, like I said, nobody ever remarked about it on the air, but I thought I'd ask. But I've now taken the MDX1600 out of line and the new gear has no such problems. The old configuration I had was: Behringer B1 mic Xenyx 502 mixer Nady 31-band EQ MDX1600 Radial Engineering J-ISO isolation transform...

Behringer MDX1600 question

I currently use a Behringer MDX1600 processor/compressor in my (admittedly limited) audio chain. It's the last item before the isolation transformer that connects to the ACC2 port on my SDX. I noticed something early on that kind of bugged me about it -- it's less of an issue now, but I've become cu...

For the record, my call is N1GPT (General Purpose Transmitter), not N1GDP (Gross Domestic Product). :)

(Don't feel bad though: it gets mangled a lot on the air too. Too many 'e' sounds.)

Yeah, that sounds like a stock filter setup. The three optional filters are the YK-455CN-1 (250Hz), YK-88CN1 (270hz) and the YK-88SN-1 (1.8Khz). Which ones you might want depend on your operating preferences. Some distributors still have these sitting on shelves, and they're not hard to find on the ...

Oh, also, you're right about the year of manufacture. The radio was in production from 1991 to 2000. The serial number pattern is: YMMXXXXXXX Y == last digit of year of manufacture + 2 MM == month of manufacture XXXXXXX == unit number made that month So in your case, 5 - 2 is 3, which means 1993. Fi...

If you're certain the rig is fully functional and the physical condition is as good as you claim, I think $1000 is a steal, even if the rig is stock (i.e. has no optional filters or other accessories). I say certain, because sometimes, with older units, there can be intermittent problems that you mi...

I've QSOed with W1FYI a couple of times, back when I was still using the TS-850/DSP-100 combo, and his TS-950SDX sounded great. It was one of the things that finally convinced me to put a crowbar in my wallet and get one myself. Last time I heard him on 20m though, he was operating on the Flex 5000,...

Just a quick node: I've made a minor update to the modified firmware. The basic operation of the patch is to modify the code that sends commands to the DSP: when sending the command for HiFi AM mode, the patch causes the main CPU to first send a normal AM command (LPF set to 3100Hz) and then sends a...

It should be noted that the above mod is only intended to provide a line level input, but not necessarily HiFi line level input. I decided to try this mod myself and discovered this first hand. If you only replace C154, C158 and C161 as described above, you end up with a low end roll-off that's stil...

Firmware patch for Kenwood TS-950SDX HiFi AM mode available

Well, I've thought about it, I've talked about it, and now I've gone and done it. With help from da VooDoo crew, some elbow grease and a bunch of trial and error, I've managed to patch the firmware for the Kenwood TS-950SDX to correct the famous "AM doesn't work in HiFi mode" problem. I finally got ...

E-mail address has been sent via PM. Thanks! I understand about the lack of info for the AM modes, but like I said, anything helps. In order to really figure out what values the firmware is computing to send to the DSP, I think I'd have to run down what all the reset-default values are, and then see...

Looking for some info...

As previously noted, I like to use my TS-950SDX on AM. It turns out that it is possible to achieve voodoo-style audio on AM with this radio, and I even wrote a small computer-assist utility to facilitate it. However, what I'd really love to do is modify the firmware so that the external software is ...
