Bellari RP533 Placement

Post by Audio101 »

My rack is,
RE20 Mic
RP533
RP520
DEQ2496
EX3200
I-Box

Should I be running both left and right channels on the DEQ2496 with this setup? And the RP533,what would be the best placement?

Thank You,
VOODOoooooo!!!!!!!!

Howdy Audio101,
Welcome to the Forum!

Sounds like you got some real nice gear there, you should have allot of fun playin with those units.

You could run the DEQ2496 with both channels but in different positions in the line up. That way you can use the EQ in one position then apply the compression in a different place.

You should try swapping the order of the RP520 with the RP533. The order you might try would be like this...

RE20 Mic
RP520
RP533
DEQ2496 (Left Channel running the PEQ and maybe the Downward Expander)
EX3200
DEQ2496 (Right Channel running the DEQ Compressor)
I-Box

As far as the settings on the RP533, try these... We use the 533 to 'soften' the audio somewhat and give it a 'smooooth' sound before the exciter section. This is done by using a sloooow release (.5 seconds), a fast attack (about .7 millisecond), and a ratio of about 3:1.

Gain - about 9:00
Threshold - about 11:00 depends upon your gain settings
Ratio - 11:00
Attack - Full Counterclockwise
Release - Full Clockwise
Output - about 9:00 depends upon your gain settings
Bottom - About 11:00
Definition - About 10:00

We set the Threshold to about 20db on the peaks with it usually about 6 to 10db on normal talking.

Let us know how it plays!

Hi Mike! Why a rp520? R533 has a section in the microphone amplifier.

Howdy ua3lnk,

True, The RP533 does have a mic Pre stage in it.

Audio 101 has both the RP520 and the RP533. Since he is using both devices, it would be better to have the RP520 as the first Mic Pre as that is all it does. Then go into the the RP533 which goes thru the mic preamp, compressor, then the Exciter.
So, in our opinion, the RP520 should go before the effects instead of after for proper gain structure. In other words, To have all the amplification before the effects to set the proper gain levels.

Why use both devices?
3 reasons come to mind,

1 - Some microphones need more amplification then others (ie. RE20) and it is better to have 2ea pre amps at low levels for better S/N then it is to have one turned all the way up.

2 - The additional Tube stage will add some more color.

3 - More Tubage = Bigger EGO!

Okay, I got it! Damn it! And I used to think why they are using two microphone amplifier! ha ha ha !!!!!if I use tube mic studio project t3 once in rp533???I did not have enough gain?It would be better to connect another microphone amplifier?I still have a MIC 100.

It depends upon the Signal to Noise Ratio of the MIC 100.
Try it and see which sounds better, running just the RP533 at high level, or using both at lower level. Sometimes you might have to use the input pad on the RP533 if the previous Pre amp is too hot.

The Acid Test is which configuration ultimately sounds better.
