Rack Ordering (with two compressor)

Post by PU2THW »

Hi everyone. My name is Eric (PU2THW) from Sao Paulo Brazil. And now i´am addict to eSSB audio. (NOT A VOODOO because i don´t have BASS PROCESSOR yet...) But, i´am trying to give to my listeners a good sound. But i have some doubt.
The equipments what i using are:

MIC Senheiser e815s
Mixer XENYX 802 (MIC PREAMP) But i wanna a MIC2200 or ARTTUBE
DEQ2496 (EXPANDER GATE) CH1
DEQ2496 (with PEQ and DEQ turned on) CH2
BEHRINGER T1952 TUBE COMPOSER
Homemade iBOX with a very good Isolation Transformer
KENWOOD TS-2000

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The order of my rack is correct ? I now, i´am using two Compressor and DEQ of 2496 is better than 1952 but the 1952 have a little of HARMONIX provided by tube and i like. How i can use all of this equipments ? I can use the t1952 with the 2496 DEQ turned on ??? Thanks everyone and sorry for my poor English.

Howdy Eric,
Welcome to the Forum!!!!
Glad you are here.

Sure you can use all the equipment!!
Compressors are great pieces of gear as they are so versatile.
You can use them for Audio effects as well as for simple duties of sibilance control. In fact we use 3 of them in our audio rack.

The first is a high plate voltage tube type, Bellari RP533. It is located after the Aphex 622 Downward Expander and before the HHB Radius 20 Parametric EQ (another high plate voltage tube unit). It is used to 'soften' the audio somewhat and give it a 'smooooth' sound before the exciter section. This is done by using a sloooow release (.5 seconds), a fast attack (about .7 millisecond), and a ratio of about 3:1. We set the Threshold to about 20db on the peaks with it usually about 6 to 10db on normal talking.

The second compressor is a Bellari RP583. This is also a High Plate voltage tube unit. We use it to control the gain and dynamics of the audio to a RP562 Exciter. The RP562 is very gain sensitive and needed something in front of it to regulate the dynamics. The settings for it are a release of about 1 second, an attack of about 1millisecond, and a ratio of about 4:1. We set the Threshold to limit the peaks on the RP562 unit after it.

The Third compressor is a TC Electronic Triple-C. This is a multi band compressor that shapes the audio in a way that a single band unit just can't do. This is the compressor we use the high frequency section to reduce sibilance, The mid frequency section is used for separation, and the lows for smoothing. This compressor is after the EX3200 and before the DSP1024P.

So you see, if you use each piece for a purpose and get the settings correct, you can use many pieces of equipment.

In your case, Try it in between the 2 channels of the DEQ2496. In between the Expander Gate of channel 1 and the PEQ of channel 2. This will let you soften and smooth the audio a little before you EQ it. Try it there and see how you like it. It is really just a matter of personal taste.

Have Fun!!!!

Thanks Guru :-) i put the T1952 Between the Channels and sounds wonderful. I set the T1952 like you said, at normal speaking 6 to 10db of atenuation and peaks of 20dbs (18, 17). Now it´s only missing a Pre-Amplifier for the Microphone and a Bass Processor. DEQ of 2496 i set like NU9N said on his site. You have a better explanation to configure the DEQ? 73 and Thanks a lot. Excellent!
Nope, John really has the settings nailed on that thing, about the only difference would be the threshold settings to suit your gain structure.
Of course experimenting is always encouraged!!!
